Cycle C 2010

FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT

Invitation:

We have begun a new year of grace,

awaiting, not Christmas, but Christ.

Let us welcome Him in the midst of our world as we pray.

(Suggested seasonal response: “God of Peace, hear our prayer.”)

Intentions:

For an abounding love in the Body of Christ

that prepares it to stand erect before the Son of Man, let us pray:

For our priests who minister in ways that makes God’s love visible,

especially to those who are suffering, let us pray:

For the raising up of men and women who strengthen the Church

through service in ordained and lay ministry, let us pray:

For strength in times of challenge or tribulation

for the catechumens and candidates [we welcome this weekend] [we recently welcomed]

as they begin/continue their instruction in Gospel living, let us pray:

For the people of Jewish faith,

called together by God to bear witness to “the Lord our justice”, let us pray:

For hearts drowsy with complacency to awaken

to respond to the signs of peril and promise in our times, let us pray:

For an enlightened commitment in the churches and world

to ease the pain and distress inflicted on individuals, families, and nations by AIDS, let us pray:

You can choose alternatives to make this intention more general, or to selectively “name names”:

For all who are dying each day in the frightful destruction of their homelands

[through war, bad governance, or crushing debt] [in N.], let us pray:

For parents who endeavor to instruct their children in God’s way

by their own lives of faithfulness and love, let us pray:

For police and security officers

who strive to serve the public with vigilance, good judgment, and justice, let us pray:

For consolation and strength for those whose world has been shattered

by personal tragedy, natural disaster, or national upheaval, let us pray:

For release for those weighed down by the anxieties of life, let us pray:

For the protection of all who are vulnerable to cold and injury in winter harshness,

including emergency personnel, let us pray:

You may insert the name if your community is sponsoring a particular charitable activity (such as a Giving Tree) during Advent:

For blessing on those who will be touched this holiday season

through our individual charity

and through (name the activity, event, etc.), let us pray:

For an abounding love in every season

that leads us to seek out the sick, the sorrowing, and the lonely, let us pray:

For those who are isolated during this holy season by illness or infirmity,

[including N.,] let us pray:

For those whom the Lord has come and called home to Himself,

[including ___________,] let us pray:

Concluding Prayer:

Lord our justice,

your Son brought a new beginning to our human story.

Today and each day of this Advent,

hear the prayers we carry in our hearts and in our actions,

for we live and pray through the One Who was, Who is,

and Who is to come, Christ our Lord.

AMEN.
